I’ve been in a funk. Work has been slow, and book signings and sales have been sluggish since winter started. With a lot of free time on my hands, I’ve been working on adding content to MississippiValleyTraveler.com, cleaning up some aesthetic issues, and kicking off a marketing effort. The work has been tedious and time [...] It’s early November, and I’m driving around the eastern half of Iowa visiting local bookstores and trying to convince them that they should carry my travel guides and host a book signing. I’m not the only one with a busy agenda. Farmers in combines are racing through the last harvest of the season (mostly corn), [...] I can’t help myself. Maybe I have deep, unresolved issues when it comes to God and religion (”God is a loving presence…God is dead…No, God never was… God is just an absentee landlord”), but I just can’t stop myself from visiting old churches (”Look at that lovely church; I wonder what it is like inside…”). I [...] Dubuque’s capitalists struck it rich and poured money into extravagant buildings to prove their worth. Fortunately for us, many of those buildings are still around, including four churches that would be treasures in a city much larger than modest Dubuque. |
